Use Grocery Navigator with ChatGPT, Claude and other AI assistants (MCP)

Grocery Navigator offers an MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard AI assistants use to connect to other services. Once connected, you can ask your assistant, for example:

  • “Put milk, eggs and two kilos of potatoes on my shopping list.”
  • “What is still open on my weekend list?”
  • “Find a vegetarian recipe with lentils and plan it for Wednesday.”
  • “Put all ingredients of this week’s menu plan on my shopping list.”
  • “Are there offers for the groceries on my list?”

The assistant works with your own account: the same lists, recipes, menu plan, household, receipts and offers you see in the app. Changes show up in the app right away, and the other way round.

You do not need a key or a token. When you connect, the assistant opens a Grocery Navigator sign-in page.

  1. In your assistant, add a new MCP server (often called a connector, custom connector or extension). Enter the address above. If it asks for a name, use Grocery Navigator. If it asks for the authentication type, choose OAuth.
  2. A Grocery Navigator page opens. Choose Sign in and use the same account you use in the app. A new guest account created here would have none of your lists.
  3. The page shows Authorize access, the name of the assistant, and the account you are signed in with. Check both and tap Approve.
  4. You return to the assistant. It now lists the Grocery Navigator tools.

Menus in these programs change from time to time. If a name does not match, look for “connector”, “MCP” or “extension” in the settings.

Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector. Enter Grocery Navigator and the address, tap Add, then Connect. In a chat, turn the connector on in the tools menu.

Terminal window
claude mcp add --transport http grocery-navigator https://gnav.eu/mcp

Then type /mcp in Claude Code, choose grocery-navigator and sign in.

Settings → Apps & Connectors. Custom connectors may require Developer mode (under Advanced settings). Choose Create, enter the name and address, and set authentication to OAuth.

Intelligence → Connectors → Add connector → Custom MCP connector. Enter the name and address.

Run MCP: Add Server from the command palette, choose HTTP and enter the address. Or add it to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
"servers": {
"grocery-navigator": { "type": "http", "url": "https://gnav.eu/mcp" }
}
}

Settings → MCP → Add new MCP server, or add it to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
"mcpServers": {
"grocery-navigator": { "url": "https://gnav.eu/mcp" }
}
}

goose configure → Add Extension → Remote Extension (Streamable HTTP), then enter the address.

Any assistant that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP with OAuth sign-in works. Enter the address and follow steps 2 to 4 above.

  • Grocery lists: create and delete lists, add and remove items, change quantities, tick items off, share a list through a public link.
  • Recipes: search, create and change recipes, ingredients, tags and photos, and put the ingredients on a list.
  • Menu plan: plan recipes on days and put the ingredients of a day or a range on a list.
  • Household: create your household and manage its members.
  • Receipts: add receipts to a list, with total and photo.
  • Offers: search offers, find offers for a list or a recipe, and post offers.

It has the same rights as you have in the app, no more.

  • The assistant acts in your name. It can also delete lists and recipes, so read its plan before you confirm larger changes.
  • Recipes the assistant creates are public, like new recipes in the app. Offers it posts are visible to all users.
  • To disconnect, remove the connector in your assistant.
